About this spot

Portland Harbour is the 2012 Olympic sailing venue and arguably the finest flat-water kitesurfing spot on the south coast. The vast sheltered harbour — one of the largest man-made harbours in the world — sits inside the protective arm of the Isle of Portland and the enclosing breakwater, which blocks Atlantic swell and dramatically smooths the water surface. The result is near-flat conditions in almost any wind direction, at almost any tide state.

The defining character of this spot is its reliability. The Venturi effect created by the raised landmass of Portland and the surrounding hills compresses and accelerates wind as it flows through the area, producing consistent, clean pressure that is often stronger than you might expect from a forecast. Easterly and north-easterly winds are particularly prized — they blow cross-shore across the main launching beach near Hamm Beach and generate glassy flat water inside the harbour. Westerly and south-westerly winds, the most common prevailing direction, give a slightly choppier but still very workable surface.

Tides have less bearing here than at open beach spots, because the harbour's sheltered interior remains kitable at all states. The best window is mid to low tide, when large areas of waist-deep flat water extend far offshore. Start approximately two hours after high water when the shallows begin to emerge. The main tidal caution is around Ferrybridge at the southern end, where the ebbing tide runs fast through the narrow channel — keep well clear of this on an outgoing tide.

A Portland Harbour Authority permit (currently £3.80/day, available online) is required for all kitesurfers, along with third-party insurance. A BKSA membership covers both insurance and the permit exemption for students training with CS Boardsports. Summer brings a Seasonal Exclusion Zone off Hamm Beach (June–September), marked by red and yellow inflatable buoys, restricting the kiting area around swimmers — plan your launch and riding lines accordingly.

Hazards

Ferrybridge tidal current on an ebbing tide — stay away from the southern channel · Boat traffic throughout the harbour — keep eyes open at all times · Seasonal Exclusion Zone off Hamm Beach (June–September), marked by red/yellow buoys · Portland Harbour Authority permit required (£3.80/day) plus third-party insurance · Easterly winds at high tide — deeper water, harder conditions · Check for racing events before launching

Getting there & parking

Portland Harbour is reached by following the A354 from Weymouth onto the Isle of Portland causeway — the kiting beach is on your left as you cross Chesil Beach towards Portland. Launch from either the Billy Winters car park (the most popular option, close to Hamm Beach) or from the car park opposite Chesil Beach further down the approach road. Car parks around Portland Harbour are managed by Portland Town Council — see the Portland Town Council car parks page for current charges.

Nearby spots

Also worth checking: Weymouth Beach (3 miles north, works in S and SW winds when the harbour is busy), Chesil Beach (immediately adjacent, an entirely different exposure facing south into the English Channel), and Kimmeridge Bay (12 miles east along the Jurassic Coast, for advanced wave riders in south-westerly swell).
