Watergate Bay is one of the most popular kitesurf beaches on the north Cornish coast — a wide, exposed bay just north of Newquay that catches swell and wind from a wide arc. A north-westerly with a running swell is the classic combination: long, clean wave faces and cross-shore wind that lets you work the entire beach. Westerlies bring a good mix of swell and some flat-water channels between the breaking waves.
The bay has a designated Kitesports Zone north of the rocks midway down the beach. Launching from the correct area keeps everyone happy and the spot accessible.
Low to mid tide only. The beach narrows dramatically in the two hours approaching high tide and becomes unsuitable for launching — there simply isn't room. Plan around the tide table.
Cornwall Council car park at the beach (400 spaces). From 1 April to 31 October, charges apply 9am–6pm: 1 hour £2.20, 2 hours £4.40, 3 hours £5.50, 4 hours £6.50, 24 hours £10; weekly ticket £25. Parking is free November to March. Pay via JustPark or BuzzPay.
