Watergate Bay is a wide, mile-long Atlantic-facing beach on the north Cornish coast, about three miles north of Newquay. It is one of Cornwall's most celebrated kitesurf spots — a consistent, exposed bay that catches swell and wind from a broad arc, with the annual 'Legend of the Bay' kite competition held here every year.
The defining session is a north-westerly with a running Atlantic swell: clean, cross-shore wind and long, well-defined wave faces that let you work the entire beach. Westerlies bring powerful swell of 3 metres or more alongside flat-water channels between the breaking waves. Southerly winds produce clean walls but are the riskiest direction because the wind pushes you towards the rocks and cliffs at the north end — those days should only be approached on a dropping tide, a couple of hours before low.
Wind consistency here is good for north Cornwall. The bay's alignment means it picks up swell and wind that other nearby beaches miss, and the Extreme Academy and Atlantic Riders schools have both been operating here for years, recognising it as one of the most reliable teaching environments on the coast. May, June, October and November are generally the best months — peak summer brings crowds, while mid-winter can mean sessions that are more punishing than enjoyable for most riders.
The beach has a designated Kitesports Zone to the north of a cluster of rocks that sits midway down the sand. Launching from within this zone is a local requirement and keeps the beach accessible for everyone. Two Cornwall Council pay-and-display car parks serve the beach, with the Extreme Academy car park directly above the sand.
Atlantic Riders — IKO and BKSA-qualified instructors Andy Heald and Will Bennet (multiple British Waves Masters champions) run lessons from beginner through to advanced wave and strapless clinics. Extreme Academy is also BKSA-accredited and co-founded in 1999, offering lessons plus equipment hire and an on-site shop.
Watergate Bay is reached via the B3276 coast road north from Newquay or via the A39 and minor roads from the east. There are two Cornwall Council pay-and-display car parks at the beach — one directly behind the sand and one up the hill towards Newquay Airport. The Extreme Academy car park sits right above the beach and charges around £1 per hour or £5 for a full day, year-round. Charges on the Council parks apply from April to October (9am–6pm): 1 hour £2.20, 2 hours £4.40, up to 24 hours £10; free November to March. Pay via JustPark or BuzzPay.
Also worth checking: Fistral Beach (3 miles south in Newquay, more exposed, wave specialists only), Perranporth (8 miles south, three miles of sand, good in SW–NW), and Gwithian (25 miles south-west near Hayle, excellent flat-water option when Watergate is too big).
